The earliest digital watches featured jumping hours only. On top of the subsidiary seconds at 6, there is also a power reserve on the very top of the dial. The case back shows the manual-winding 1509 movement with three 18k pink gold bridges. Measuring 29.3 x 28.2mm, the 223-component calibre boasts a patented one-minute constant force device on top of 30 jewels, 21,600 vph and 50-hour power reserve. The 45 x 37.5mm casing is available in platinum and pink gold, limited to 69 and 68 examples respectively. The model is expected to hit the market in December.

Like Vagabondage II, another new watch, A Lange Sohne Zeitwerk, also features a power reserve indication on top, subsidiary seconds at 6, and a constant force system guaranteeing perfect and exact switch of the discs. Since a long time ago Piaget had started to create ultra-thin movements in order to cope with their distinctive watch designs. From the manual-winding 9P to the self-winding 12P wound by a 24K gold micro-rotor, the manufacturer’s works have received very high regards. As big watch is today’s fashion, it seems that ultra-thin movements have lost their grounds. Yet, any manufacturer who has an eye on quality would continue to employ such movements to avoid. Unnecessary burden to wearer’s wrist. This is so because with a thin movement, the case can be made thin, light and of close to wrist. For Piaget, they have already been a step ahead of the others. They designed 9P and 12P back then to allow the pieces to come with a semi-precious stone dial which is relative thick. They designed the calibre’ modern counterparts 430P and 830P right now so to allow their pieces to have more featured and variations in design and function.

In 2006 Piaget Altiplano Double Jeu rolled out, a dual timezone piece with two superimposed indications. By pressing the button on the case flange, the upper case can be opened to reveal the time inside. Early 2008, Piaget Black Tie Paris-New York collection revealed in Iceland. Among which the most impressive one to me was a variation of the Double Jeu. Instead of installing a movement, the upper case now contains a transparent hour glass, inside which are thousands “sand” made of white gold. Visually stunning, the piece was also expensive since it was full-paved with baguette diamonds.

Duly named Hourglass, my interest in the Piaget Altiplano Double Jeu Hourglass Watch was not in the gorgeous baguettes but the interesting design. If the historical record could be proved, then Chinese ancestors as early as 4,000 years ago had started using the instrument.Therefore, this Piaget’s piece is an east-meet-west creation blending the past with the present. Don’t think it’s no longer a Double Jeu. The piece remains a duo-face watch, while the hour glass, in a broader sense, is also a time measuring instrument.

A no-diamond version of Piaget Hourglass was launched in the 2009 session of the SIHH. The occurrence of such piece, apparently, was to cater for people who love the design like me,On top of taking out the baguettes, the white gold sands have also been changed to ceramic, resulting a list price just one-sixth the high jewelry version.I believe, on the other hand, that ceramic sand with a diameter less than 0.55mm would not be easier to process than white gold. According to data, 830P is manual-winding with 19 jewels, circular-grained base plate, Cotes de Geneva adorned and beveled bridges affixed by blued-steel screws. With a 21,600 per hour oscillation rate, the piece runs well. Of course, it makes no sense to expect a dress watch to return chronometer-level accuracy. On the testing machine, it displayed a discrepancy of around 10 seconds.

Big and thick, the piece is not heavy on wrist since it is skeletoned. Paring with a large-scale alligator strap, it renders an elegant charm. Yet, I don’t like its pin-fixed deployant clasp, the design the brand share with Vacheron Constantin. The drawback is that without the relevant tool, the length of the strap can not be finely adjusted. At Rolex, even a bracelet can be adjusted anytime. It’s easier to do that on a strap, right?
