Best Answer – Chosen by Voters

There are at least 7 things you should consider:

1. Magnetic fields: Do not expose your watch to intense magnetic fields such as loudspeakers or refrigerators and other electromagnetic appliances.

2. Bathing in the sea: always rinse your watch with fresh warm water afterwards.

3. Shocks: Whether thermal or other shocks, avoid them. In the event of violent shocks, please have your watch checked by a HAMILTON approved Service Center.

4. Crown: depending on model, push or screw it in carefully to ensure that no water enters the mechanism.

5. Cleaning: for metal bracelets and for all water-resistant cases use a toothbrush with soapy water and a soft cloth for drying.

6. Chemical products: avoid direct contact with solvents, detergents, perfumes, cosmetic products etc., since they may damage the bracelet, the case or the gaskets.

7. Temperatures: Do not expose your watch to sudden temperature changes (exposure to sunlight followed by immersion in cold water) or extreme temperatures over 60°C (140°F) or under than 0°C (32°F).

How to replace a watch bezel? Recently, many of my customers have asked me these watch bezel replacement questions. So, this is what we do, enjoy!

1. The tools, here are my suggestions, a cloth, a knife, some masking tape, a pair of gloves and a watch(Here is a Rolex Deweller).

2. Put the masking tape between watch case and the bezel.

3. At the same place put the knife in, gentlely and carefully.

4. Bend the knife till watch bezel pop off.

5. Pull off the bezel and pay attention not to losing the spring at 12 o’clock position.

6.Here is the backside of the bezel and you can see how it works.

7. Press the bezel from the backside of the bezel insert until it pop off.

8. So we got this.

9. Put the new bezel at the case, still need to pay attention to the spring at 12 o’clock., keep it at the inside.

10. Lay the bezel insert inside the bezel and look so it line up. Then press it down at the bezel and when it’s there at more than the halfway round pull off the complete bezel again.

11. Put the last parts together nice and gently.

12. Press the bezel and bezel insert together with thumbs. do not use tools like pliers, it will damage the bezel insert.

13. Sometimes the above process doesn’t goes on easily especially when doing the tenth step. Well, put a cloth at the edge of the table then and it will help a lot.

14. Bezel ready for placement.

15. Put the bezel over the spring at 12 o’clock and look carefully so every part in its place.

16. Now the bezel has in its position but as you can see it should be a little lower on watch case so the crystal can be higher than it.

17. Press down the bezel on both sides at the same time until hear a ‘click’ sound. Now the bezel has in its place, the crystal comes out and the ratch spring starts to work.

18. Check whether the bezel is line up. If it isn’t, relocated it again.

If not sure about your skill, let watchmaker handle it, after all, it’s much safer.

Q: I have a rolex mechanical watch I don’t wear much any more. What is the best to maintain the watch? Currently I just let it sit in a safe place but should I wind it up every now and then?

Best Answer – Chosen by Asker

If you wind it once a month is good enough to keep the lubricant running. Most of the Rolex watches have a 48 hours reserve, at least the GMT, the submariner, the seadweller and the Dayjust do.

If you wear it every day you should have it cleaned and lubricated every 4-5 years. If you do not use it at all or very little you should be having it serviced every 10 years because the lubricant oils do loose their characteristics with time.

Remember that if you intend to use it underwater you need to have them water tested once a year! This because o-rings and seals age pretty quickly.

When buying a new watch, most of the times people will find the new watch band is longer than they actually need, so they have to ask the watch seller for help. But if the watch seller doesn’t provide the service or they ask extral money for it, what should we do? Well, that’s what we will talk about today, how to adjust watch band length by ourselves.

Before we start, one thing we should know is the watch band we talking here is matal band whose links held with pins.

These are tools we need: pliers, a link pin remover, a rubber-covered hammer and a band holdiing base.

Step 1. Find arrow underside the watch band. The arrow underside watch strap shows the direction to remove pins.

Step 2. If there is no arrow, comparing the holes in both sides of watch band. Generally speaking, we should push the pins from smaller-hole side to bigger-hole side.

Step 3. Point link pin remover’s penetration tip at the pin.

Step 4. Turn link pin remover’s handle clockwise, push the pin out.

Step 5. When the pin is out enough then use pliers pull it out.

Step6. Use small rubber-covered hammer knock the link pin in when reinstalling.

Many people think digital watches are much cheaper than mechanical watches, so they don’t deserve good careness and maintenance, but the truth is, most watches people wearing on the planet are digital ones. Unbelievable, Huh? We have talked a lot about mechanical and quartz watches’ maintenance in past few months, today, we will share some experience on how to use digital watches more properly and how to maintain them in daily life. Hope this will be helpful!

Temperature

When temperature is between 25 to 28 centigrade, digital watch can keep time very accurately, generally speaking, 1 second inaccuracy is maximum. But when temperature goes up to 50 centigrade or decreases close to zero centigrade, the inaccuracy will incorresponding rise up to 2 seconds or bigger. When temperature reach and higher than 60 centigrade, digital watch’s LCD screen will become dark. Finally, when temperature lower than zero centigrade, LCD screen on digital watch will be useless. So in freezing winter, if you can, try to wear your digiral watch as much as possible, your body temperature will help them keep time more accurately. Moreover, too high or too low temperature might cause the battery in watch movement to leak.

Battery

Usually, digital watch’s battery can provide power in one year or so. But the electricity consumption of illumination function is very big, approximately one second illumination needs the same power with one hour time counting. When battery gonna to dead, screen light will become dim, or more obviously, time number on LCD screen getting dim or even vanished. When replace battery, if not really sure about what gonna to do you should send your watch to watch shop. Further more, though looks like very similar, different kinds and brands battery got different voltage, you can’t just find one and install it in your watch. Last, when battery is dead, uninstall it as soon as possible, or there will be battery leaks if left too long time.

Water Resistance

Digital watch, especially those numerical digital watches, most of their waterproof power is not so good. Although there is “waterproof to XX metres” written on the introduction leaflet, you still should pay close attention to avoid your digital watch contacting with water.

Different from mechanical watches, in digital watches there are lots of electronic circuits and electronics components, if get water in, the destroy will be disastrous, your watch properly will get scrapped. Especially LCD screen and integrated circuit boards, no need to mention water, even if get little moist, after a period of time, there must be some problems show up. Therefore, when wash your hands or do other things could contact water, you should remove your digital watch first, if met rainy day, try to keep your watch away from rainfall. Once found your watch get water in, send it to watchshop immediately, let professional people handle it.

Buttons and LCD screens

Different with crowns and buckles on mechanical or quartz watches, digital watch only got buttons, and most of time the only way to use different functions is to press different times, such as press once is adjust hour, twice is adjust minute, etc. So when use digital watches, protect its buttons is very important. LCD screen should be replaced in every five to seven years. When find the light or button on digital watch doesn’t work, or can’t keep time accurately, you should send it to repair ASAP.

Hey! guys. Yesterday I have told you some methods for Quartz Watch Maintenance. Have you tried them? Well, today I will continue my topic, share my experience on how to maintain your mechanical watches.

Here we go!

1.Use soft cloth or silk wipe those dirt and sweat on watch case away frequently.

2.Wind your watch regularly and try your best to keep it fully wound.

3.When adjust time, pull crown out a little, then wind it, neither clockwise or counter-clockwise is OK. But for calendar and aviation watches, watch hands should not be pulled back.

4.Do not let your watch suddenly get too cold or hot. Violent change of temperature will make it out of order. Due to the violeant change of temperature, those springs in mechanical watch are so easy to break.

5.Avoid severly shaking.

6.Mechanical watch get magnetized will affect its work accuracy, so you should keep it away from place with strong magnetic field and irradiation.

7.Do not put mechanical watch with face powder or other cosmetics in a same drawer or case. Because powder may sneak into watch through invisible gaps and affect inside engine oil, eventually influence its running. Above all, do remember not to put mechanical watch in wardrobe has camphor in, because camphor will permeate into watch after gasification, solidify engine oil, make it lose its effect of antirust and lubrication, components will get rust, wear and tear easily, results in can’t keep time accurately and shortening its sevrice life.

8.Check your watch regularly and open it to oil. Generally speaking, a mechanical watch should be open and cleaned once every three years. For those less leakproof watches, clean period should be shortened.

9.When mechanical watch can’t keep time accurately, send it to professional repair shop, let them take it. Because in this condition, adjust time through crown won’t work, watch needs clean and oil.

10.If you plan to store your mechanical watch long. Besides should clean it carefully before storage, you should wind it once or twice per month, make watch in good work condition.

1.Avoid strongly dashing.

Though many watch are scratchproof today, we still should avoid sudden dash, so when doing exercises, it’s best to remove your watch.

2.Do not place your watch near magnetic items.

Many watch’s parts are made from metal, although has antimagnetic devices, near magnetic objects still may make your watch out of order, therefore, don’t leave your watch around radio, television and other electric equipments.

3.Do not let your watch contact with solvents, mercury, cosmetic spray, detergents, viscosity or paint and camphor.

Otherwise the case, band, etc. will get discolored, deteriorated or damaged. Especially the camphor, do remember to keep your watch away from it, camphor can depcompose oil, can easily lead to the oil on movement broken down, thus make your watch doesn’t work.

4.Do not open watch’s bottom cover often.

Avoid those moisture and dust in air floating into watch causes manchanical malfunction.

5.Away from water and steam.

Though there are water resistance devices in watch, it still be possible that those waterproof fittings become loose, water and steam will make fittings rust and furthermore, useless. So, you need to take off your watch when taking shower.

6.Store properly.

Do not put watch in pocket or bags, lest tiny cloth fiber and dust into it. Perfume and cosmetics’ volatile components can also cause watch’s corrosion and oxidation easily. Therefore, when you plan to not wear it for a long time, you should place it in a cool, day boxes.

7.Remove your watch when go to bed.

Sheet’s fiber, cotton and temperature change, all these may damage your watch.

8.Avoid rapid temperature change.

Because watch case is made from variety of different materials, rapid change of temperature may destroy cooperations among those components, and then affect its water resistance.
